As advocates for science-backed skincare, our dermatology experts would never suggest a full routine overhaul each season. Changing products too frequently isn’t just an extra unnecessary expense, you may also risk irritating or damaging your skin barrier. What’s more, consistency is the key to seeing results, and changing products too often might prevent you from experiencing the full benefit of your chosen product.

However, we know there’s evidence to suggest that the weather affects our skin in multiple ways including the rates of transepidermal water loss, changes to hydration and plumpness, how much sebum (oil) our skin products and changes to melanin production. [1] That’s why the products we use daily should still be tweaked and adapted to support our skin in the specific climate we’re in. [2]

What happens to our skin in spring?

When the weather becomes significantly warmer, the skin sweats more, which then signals the skin to create more sebum to protect itself. The increase in oil production causes pores to dilate, resulting in an increase in the number of visible pores in the skin and creating the ideal environment for breakouts and blemishes to appear. For this reason, we recommend using daily essentials that help counterbalance this seasonal shift. We’ve selected some of Dermatica’s top products to hydrate, protect and support your skin barrier without overloading it or causing further breakouts. [3]

A balancing spring routine

Morning:

Cleanser
Remove overnight sweat from the skin without clogging the pores with an oil-free, hydrating cleanser. Formulated using the NICE guidelines for sensitive skin, our Balancing Glycerin Gel Cleanser is free from soaps and sulphates to maintain the skin’s delicate pH balance.

Ascorbic acid
One of skincare’s most researched and evidence-backed ingredients, topical Vitamin C works with your sunscreen to protect the skin from UV and free radical damage. The form of topical Vitamin C called ascorbic acid is also effective at fading dark spots, stimulating collagen production and promoting a natural, healthy radiance to the skin. Our Vitamin C 15%: Fresh Batch Ascorbic Acid is made in one month batches and packaged in airtight opaque bottles to ensure optimal freshness, with zero degradation.

Moisturiser
If spring has triggered more sebum in your skin, it might be time to switch to a lighter moisturiser. People with blemish-prone and oily skin love our Soothing Centella Gel Moisturiser. It cools and hydrates the skin without contributing to breakouts. For dry or balanced skin types, lock in moisture with our Nourishing Ceramide + Peptide Moisturiser.

Sunscreen
The likelihood of you spending more time outside is greater by spring – and our experts stress that you need to use broad-spectrum sunscreen with UVA protection every day, even when it’s cloudy. Together with ascorbic acid, sunscreen helps protect the skin from photoageing, pigmentation and sun damage.

Evening:

Cleanser
This time, we recommend double cleansing. Use our Caring Squalane Cream Cleanser first, then follow with Balancing Glycerin Gel Cleanser to make sure every last trace of sunscreen, make-up and pollution is removed.
