What is the difference between tretinoin and retinol?
Retinol, though similar in name, is actually weaker in strength than a retinoid. Both are derived from Vitamin A, but because retinols have a lower concentration than retinoids and are in a different form, it can take longer to see results. Retinols are readily available over the counter, whereas retinoids aren’t available over the counter. At Dermatica, we’re able to provide higher strength topical retinoids that aren’t available over the counter.
What's the best strength of tretinoin for anti-ageing?
This depends on your skin type and your tolerance to tretinoin, so it will vary from person-to-person. To make sure your formula is right for your skin, we start patients at a low dose and increase gradually to avoid irritation. If you’ve previously been using a retinoid, you can let us know what strength and we’ll make sure your Dermatica treatment is working at its most effective level.
Can tretinoin improve deep lines such as naso-labial folds, elevens or marionette lines?
The appearance of deeper lines in our face can lessen or fade over time with treatment, however the results may take longer to see than with finer lines. As we age, our body produces less collagen and we can expect to lose some volume (plumpness) in our faces. While tretinoin is known to cause an increase in dermal collagen production, please note that topical treatment alone may not be enough to achieve your desired results with deeper lines. As ageing is a continual process, the goal of topical treatment is often to prevent rather than reverse signs of ageing.
Will my treatment help with wrinkles?
If your skin goal is to fade the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, then we’ll carefully select powerful, science-backed active ingredients that should help smooth your skin and give you a more youthful look.

Retinoids are prescribed in Dermatica’s personalised formulas to restore dermal collagen, which improves fine lines. Niacinamide is often added as well to boost ceramide production, which increases hydration levels in your skin.

The ingredients in your formula are chosen by dermatology experts, and the strength will be adjusted as you continue your journey so you can get the best results. For deeper or larger wrinkles, while our active ingredients may improve the texture and appearance, you may need further treatment like fillers or Botulinum Toxin (botox) to fade them completely.
